Concerning Haiti
December 20, 2010
.
“I think this is an opportunity for you to gain knowledge, to speak with many people, to ask questions and learn.”
- Words from my host Felix Hazard to myself my first night in Petionville, Haiti.
I know now that no American can speak with any authority concerning Haiti. No man capable of disregarding his own culture and intimately understanding that of another can exist. An American can only speak with authority concerning the dignity and capability of the Haitian people, of the beauty and wisdom that exists within each if a bit disheveled from the greed and corruption of foreigners past and present. An American can only speak with authority concerning the problem of his own nation: the sick consumption that beats on like a black heart and bleeds down into the third world.

Nashville Cities Of Service Plan
September 24, 2010
I received a call from the lovely folks at the mayor’s office a few weeks back. They had expressed interest in using a photo of mine taken during the flood for their cities of service plan. I was happy to let them use it and even more thrilled when I received a second call from them asking for a higher resolution version and permission to use it as the cover. Pretty cool.

The Cheatham County Fair
August 29, 2010
The Cheatham County Fair speaks firmly and demandingly. It opens its arms up to you and holds you against a chest full of hair stale with sweat and motor oil. It is the grandfather you always wanted: calloused, gray, and tobacco stained with a spirit of youth running through the heart that invades you and keeps you smiling until your cheeks hurt.

Mark Sloan

Mark was one of my first friends here in Nashville. Fate wrapped it’s golden wings around us with side by side dorm rooms during my one semester at Trevecca several years back and I’m happy to say he and I have stayed in touch pretty well. I told him I wanted to take some photos of him and the next day we were out at a friends house drinking beer and making a go of it:
